The Goddess of Mercy (Guan Yin) Temple in Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling, Penang, will have a consecration ceremony of all its statues in the premises on June 28.
Kong Hock Keong board of trustees chairman Datuk Seri Khoo Keat Siew said the ceremony would be held from 8.30am following the completion of the temple’s restoration works in 2015.
“The first phase of the restoration started in 2011 after a storm caused the roof at the back portion of the hall to collapse. Although no one was injured, this incident alerted the trustees to look into the condition of the temple as a whole.
“This is the oldest Chinese temple in Penang with a history dating back to 1800,” he told a press conference on Saturday.
“Devotees will visit the temple in droves on the first and 15th day of the Lunar calendar each month,” said Khoo.
On consecration day, there will be the launching of the Goddess of Mercy’s shrine, the unveiling of the Guan Yin statue and consecration of all the temple statues. There will also be an offering to Buddha and a vegetarian lunch after the ceremony.
