Event Description

The doll of Japan – Shapes of Prayer, Embodiments of Love is being showcased with seventy pieces of Japanese doll artifacts were brought over from Japan for the show as part of the 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Malaysia and Japan. The exhibition brings together traditional Japanese doll artifacts that are unique and with high quality of craftsmanship. The sculptures gathered from various regions in Japan portray stories of celebrations, war as well as culture and tradition.

Workshops on the art of origami (Japanese paper folding), wearing the yukata, the Japanese language and traditional Japanese games were also held during the launch of the showcase at Petaling Jaya Museum. There was also a Malaysian cultural performance to entertain Japanese guests.

Japan Embassy counsellor Hiroyuki Orikasa said the dolls showcased have long been a part of the daily life and culture of the Japanese people. “Each region in Japan produces dolls with their own character and style, and it is also different for each festival. “I hope this exhibition will create more opportunity for Malaysians to learn about Japan, not only in term of culture, but also the political and social aspects,” he said.

The exhibition’s next stop is the Penang State Museum in George Town from July 12 to Aug 28.
